My name is Nicole, and I am a Chappaquiddick Wampanoag woman of mixed ancestry reconnecting with my culture, my history, and the creative practices of my ancestors. My journey with Aquene Creations is part of that reclamation; an intentional path back to balance, peace, and identity.
For a few years, I worked as a research scientist, a field I poured myself into. Over time, the environment shifted in ways that deeply affected my sense of self. The experience pushed me to step back, reevaluate who I was, and ask myself where I truly felt aligned. I chose to create something of my own, something rooted in authenticity. This business became my way of reclaiming my voice, my creativity, and my direction in life.
Every piece I create is made with intention, care, and respect. Whether I’m working with wampum, natural stones, sterling silver, or traditional materials, my hands are guided by the teaching behind my business name: Aquene, meaning “peace.” My work is meant to ground, center, and honor the quiet strength that lives in all of us.
Wampum, especially, carries a deep story. For Wampanoag people, wampum is more than a shell; it is history, memory, and connection. It represents treaties, relationships, storytelling, and the teachings that guide us to carry ourselves with respect and intention. When I incorporate wampum into my art, I do so with reverence and gratitude. Every piece of wampum I use is collected by hand on Martha's Vineyard and Chappaquiddick Island, making each creation deeply personal and rooted in place.
Aquene Creations is more than a brand. It’s my way of aligning with my heritage, honoring the endurance of my ancestors, and rebuilding my life on my own terms. I hope my work brings peace, grounding, and meaning into your life; the same way creating it brings those things into mine.
